Diamante, the title of this work, is born after another, previously presented, titled “Café Portugal” (...) it showed what I felt to be an extinct reality, emptied by constant transformations and progressive waves of emigration and migration which has mostly happened in the second half of the 20th century, (...)

It happens though, that once a year during summer, the houses, the cafés, the streets, and the parties are filled with funny accents of foreign languages and strange license plates. It is time to meet the people again, time to rest, to do business and everyone gets a tip. “Diamante” (...) was filmed during august, (...) I’m not sure if Diamante is what you have or what you look for, if it’s gold, the landscape or man. What is left is the movement and autumn is almost there.

(…)it has its sadist or whore sew it up; the eyes, anus, urethra, breasts and nose are sewn shut. It has itself strung up to stop the organs from working; flayed, as if the organs clung to the skin; sodomized, smothered, to make sure everything is sealed tight.

Cinema Mudo is the result of a field work which lasted one month in Jerusalem, between May 21 and June 22 2003 (...) in the contest of Arting Jerusalem, contemporary art festival, organized by The Musrara School (Jerusalem, Israel) with the support of the Fondazione Pistoletto (Biella, Italy).

In this period, I have investigated the life of a small African community living on the Mussulman district of Old Jerusalem. (...)

At the end of the first week and a half working, I edited a first film in video, (Film 1) from the first footage of the inhabitants (...)

In a second film (Film 2), more complex, I have worked on the particularities of the African district and its relations with a collective memory (and the material culture by which it is sustained). (...)

This second part of the project was conceived without a soundtrack so that it could be commented during each projection. The film is a witness of an investigation process and, together, an excuse to share my personal experience with this community and to dilute the traditional borders between the audience and the projection.

The whole project will be, till the end of 2004, re-edited and presented the next year in Porto city.

Paulo Mendes

ANTHOLOGY OF GOOD BEHAVIOUR

The practice of interference, the dynamics of fracture and disorder constitute one of the emblematic orientations of Paulo Mendes´ artwork.

An obvious desire of mobilising the debate and establishing a committed relationship between artistic activity and civil society is also patent in the works which analyse the repercussions resulting from certain events of Portuguese and world current affairs.

The way in which Paulo Mendes incorporates in these works the concrete and documental value of video, television and film recordings, of newspapers and magazines of considerable circulation, as well as the cultural and popular relevance of trivial or entertaining objects[1], is representative of that quest of establishing, in the projects, a consistent involvement with the real. That procedure transmits a sought-after effect of relative impersonality in detriment of the more expressive features of the artistic practice, and seems to be rooted in the intention of consubstantiating the contextual preponderance of all the artistic initiative.

Although it is possible to find in all of Paulo Mendes´ work a utopic-natured appeal, centred in the critical and self-critical attitude which tends to recognise the authenticity and the mobilising engagement of the artist in the midst of society, it is likewise important to mention the pragmatical pressupositions on which, from early on, his artistic praxis has been based. Thus, he revealed a permanent theoretical concern regarding the understanding of the multiple possibilities of interventive performance and did not neglect the establishing of a convergence with respect to the appropriation of the media-orientated strategies of the consumer society. That is visible, namely in the works in which Paulo Mendes resorts to images from advertising and to the employment of the notion of art as merchandise, in order to revert in his favour the persuasive and communicational efficacy that characterises them. Which is never merely an investment on the role and on the promotional value aknowledged in them, but an intentional displacement of their meaning and placement. In other words, it is about, in the ever-unexpected and peculiar involvement which brands his art, entangling them in a criticism that reaches and destabilises his very own philosophy.
